We replace our own worn-out shoes without a second thought. We notice when a coat loses its shape, when a bag's zipper starts to stick. But our dogs' accessories? Those tend to be replaced only when they fall apart completely.
Here are five signs it is time to reconsider what you are putting on your companion — for their comfort and your peace of mind.
1. The Harness No Longer Fits Properly
Dogs change shape — especially in their first two years, or after a period of weight gain or loss. A harness that once fit snugly may now be too tight across the chest or loose enough to slip over the head. Neither is safe. If you cannot fit two fingers comfortably between the harness and your dog's body, it is time for a new one.
2. The Leash Shows Signs of Fraying
A leash is a safety device first. Inspect the stitching at the handle and clip attachment points regularly. Any fraying, cracking, or weakening of the clip mechanism should prompt an immediate replacement. A broken leash on a busy street is not a risk worth taking.
3. Their Bed Has Lost Its Shape
Press down on your dog's current bed. Does it spring back? Or does your hand sink straight to the floor? A flat bed offers no support — it is the equivalent of sleeping on a bare floor. If the foam or fill has compressed beyond recovery, your dog's joints are paying the price.
4. The Collar Shows Wear on the Buckle or Fabric
Metal buckles corrode; plastic ones crack. Fabric collars absorb moisture, bacteria, and odor over time. A clean, well-maintained collar is part of good hygiene — and a worn clasp is a liability on an active walk.
5. You Wince Slightly Every Time You Put It On Them
This one is more intuitive than technical. If something about the look or feel of an accessory gives you pause — if it clashes with the care you give your home, your wardrobe, your life — trust that instinct. Your dog deserves the same thoughtfulness you extend to everything else.
